Daily report from Latakia on Tuesday 11/10/2011
Daily demonstrations are taking place in the Fine Arts school, as many students from Shukri Hakim school were transferred to it. And when they can't demonstrate outside they're then protesting inside their classes, which often led to security raiding the school, arresting the students, and beating them as one of them was beaten so hard that he went deaf.
Today another demonstration took place, and was handled the same way by security arresting two students.
Normally security patrols would start roaming around at noon around schools in anticipation, and this gets a bit more extensive in Slaybeh as they would surround mosques as well.
Situation in Al-Raml Al-Janoobi is still very unfortunate; blockade, terror, and tight security, as well as lack of water this morning. Soldiers at barriers are not only searching, dehumanizing, and using bad language with people but also they're confiscating food and other items by force sometimes.
Also in Al-Raml more than 20 security cars were stationed in the camp and in Al-Graf, as 3 of them raided few houses in Yafa neighborhood. And in Bustan Al-Samkeh 7 cars came in and arrested people from its square.
We mention that the Quatli street was blocked near Al-Hurriah bump station till Shaikh Daher and was full of soldiers.
Arrests continue, as in Slaybeh owner of Al-Ferdos shop got arrested. 32 year-old Abdulla Shami, 35 year-old Mhammad Shami, and the Imam of Al-Muhajireen mosque in Al-Raml 29 year-old Mhammad Abbas have been detained since the 1st of this month. And 18 year-old Tareq Husein was arrested today near Al-Sufi drinks in Baghdad street.
Despite the horrible situation that the city is under, protests keep taking place as another night protest in Al-Tabiyat called for the downfall of the regime, condemned the Russian and Chinese regimes and chanted in support of Homs.
Railway lines between Latakia and Aleppo are still closed despite what some local newspapers are trying to promote, as people are not able to book tickets for trains trips and are instead asked not to believe what's mentioned in these newspapers.
Four barriers were added to the road between Latakia and its industrial area.
In the town of Haffeh:
A demonstration took place in Babanna village, and other night protests took place later on in the villages of Bkas and Sherqaq calling for the prosecution of President Assad and supporting Homs.
