Daily report from
Latakia on Wednesday 12/10/2011
Against all odds
demonstrations keep on taking place in the city of Latakia, as a student
demonstration took to the streets in Ashrafiyeh due to the detention of the
school principal who had earlier on resigned in protest to the arrest of one of
his students [see video below].
Another protest took
place later at night in Al-Tabiyat, despite heavy rains, calling for the
downfall of the regime and supporting city of Homs. That was immediately
followed by attempts to quell the protest with 11 security cars entering the
area amid heavy security presence in Tabiyat and Slaybeh, and more specifically
in Eskan Street where cars were not allowed to enter during a raid which was
conducted in the same street.
The body of Haitham
Asfar, also called Abu Hamza, was delivered today to his family; the dead body
remained strapped in both hands and legs, and the family of Haitham were not
allowed to have him but instead the funeral was escorted by 4 security cars to
ensure that he got buried without being filmed.
Yesterday night,
however, Palestinian Khaled Hallaq, who’s a resident of Al-Raml, was released
from detention. Whereas two other persons were arrested in Qnainas; Khaled
Ahmad Jeblawi and Maher Omar Jeblawi.
Sounds of “Allahu
Akbar” [Praise the Lord] broke into the silence of the night in many parts of
Latakia as a peaceful sign of protest.
5 security cars were
seen entering the metro station earlier today.
In other news: City
Governor and Education Principal with their guards visited a girls’ residence
in Al-Corniche Al-Janoobi along with a state TV crew to try and report an image
of how quiet and peaceful the city is, and how everything is completely normal.
It was, however, reported that the Governor asked the girls that they must not
be influenced by what’s going on! This raises question about the peace and
quiet that this whole visit was trying to portrait to the public.
