Daily report from
Latakia on Monday 16/01/2012
With the arrival of
the Arab Delegation yesterday, the regime was ready to play its tricks. They were
taken to Latakia prison where they saw around 300 detainees lined up, although
the prison holds at least a thousand. When asked to speak up, a man intended to
do so but was suppressed by security members who then picked only two out of
the pack and took them with the observers to a room. Later only 45 prisoners
were released, all detained for normal crimes, and no activist nor anyone
imprisoned after the revolution had started was released.
Early in the morning
all security and army cars in Ugharit square were replaced by ambulances and
fire trucks, while the same members stayed in those vehicles. Also, security
and army forces replaced their uniform with civil outfits to lead the Arab
observers into believing that regime pulls its forces out.
Thugs and security arrived
at Olabi square in 4 buses, 8 four-wheelers, 3 police cars, and 6 police bikes,
as everyone was armed. They also spread in Bor Saed Street blocking all exits,
in addition to two thugs’ cars in front of Shukri Hakim in Mashrou’ Al-Slaybeh.
Thugs’ cars roamed
Al-Raml area as well terrorizing citizens and gathering in Houriah Square. They
evacuated all other spots where army would normally be positioned hoping to deceive
the observers.
Security was heavy in
Slaybeh fearing citizens would complain to the Arab observers, 9 captains were
also there. 10 security and police cars were near Sufi Cocktails, as few roads
were blocked. Heavy security was in Owieneh to prevent any night protests that’s
been happening often in the neighborhood.
At 10:30 in the
morning few delegation members visited the Central Prison where prisoners
shouted in support of Assad in a very ironic and sad scene. Three of the
observers reached Slaybeh with 12 security cars heading to Iskan Street and the
Triumph Arch under the protesters demand. Assad thugs were fully armed and
awaiting them there, accompanied by Al-Dounia and state TVs, as security members
also had cameras of their own filming people as they gather up.
And near Sufi Cocktail
the observers stepped out of their car, and the citizens then started talking
them while others were chanting from their apartments despite the armed
security accompanying the delegation members. As the observers pulled away,
security scolded people who were shouting.
One protester kept
asking the delegation to dismiss security and their cameras away to no avail. Yet
as the rain started to fall and the crowd reached Al-Takhasousiah School they
all entered a building hall pulling away from security, and this is when
everyone started telling the observers about all the violation, few told about
their torture in detention, mothers of those killed or detained also gave their
testimony. They also mentioned the blockade few areas are suffering.
As observers were told
that those who spoke out are now in danger, they gave their phone numbers to
people asking them to contact if such things occur. And as the delegation left
the building few pro regime folks were cheering for Assad, and so the
protesters countered their cheers with some of their own, which was when one of
the observers asked the protesters to calm down or they won’t be continue their
work and would eventually leave.
As the delegation went
back to their car in Slaybeh few women started talking to them as they were immediately
filmed by security men and state TV.
And as security had
their eyes on citizens talking to the observers, one sneaked to a security car
and sprayed “Go out” on it.
The delegation’s visit
to Al-Raml was postponed till tomorrow, while not sure whether they’ll visit
Qnainas or not.
Yesterday many fliers
were distributed encouraging people to demonstrate while the observers were
here, and so a demo took place in Slaybeh despite heavy rains. Another one was
near Takhasousiah School, and so was the case in Tabiyat. A big protest was
held in Dwerkeh village near Salma.
After 5 months in
Assad prisons, Ahmad Abu Khudur and Muhammad Abdeen from Al-Haffeh were finally
released last night. Also released were Abooda Hamadh and Ribah Al-Shaar. Ammar
Al-Sibai from Homs, who is 23 years old and a student in Tishreen University,
was released today. So was the case for activist Mustafa Qasoom from Al-Jisr
after 141 days in prisons as no one knew his whereabouts.
24 years old Muhammad
Fateh from Tabiyat was arrested for being seen with the observers during their
tour, the arrest was done using a taxi with no. 8070.
One of the friends of
Mannah Haytham who got killed in an explosion went to ask for his friend’s body
in the Army Hospital, and was arrested by Assad forces there!
Two were arrested near
Takhasousiah School despite the presence of the observers. And two days ago
Assad forces arrested Khaled Hajjar in Mahkamah Street.
A big explosion was
heard today in Tala’eh School in Al-Raml.
Below are videos documenting some of the day's events.
