Daily report from
Latakia on Sunday 26/02/2012
It is without a doubt
that that the constitution referendum has been the drive behind the day’s
events as evident in this report.
Poll center such as in
Slaybeh, Mashrou’ Al-Slaybeh, Al-Raml, Al-Cornish, and MarTaqla had as little
as 10 to 20 voters, and so the decision was made to shut them down early.
Security brought 9
buses of different companies like Joud, Hmaisho, and the Iron Company to the
poll center in Al-Cornish in order to support the regime’s propaganda filming
the center filled with voters.
Many academies’
students were forced to vote in favor of the constitution, and were otherwise threatened
with confiscating their student IDs and/or being deprived of attending to their
exams. Most government employees had their National IDs confiscated and were
also forced to vote.
In Jengheel village
people refrained from voting condemning the referendum and the constitution. And
in Bkas village people were provoked with Baath party representatives brought
the ballot box, and kicked them out, before demonstrating against the
referendum.
All demos were in the
same stream, as people in Owieneh protested against the referendum, and were
attacked by security members who then spread in the area, while few hid in
building halls, and more than 10 security cars were seen stopping before one
building as members entered it.
Other protests of
similar nature took place in Al-Izzi area in Jableh, and in Haffeh town in the
Southern area, as well as in Bkas village. And later at night there were short
demos in Bustan Al-Hammami and in Oweineh for the second time of the day.
Fine Arts School was
surrounded with good numbers of security cars and buses as student were locked
up inside. Security was also heavy in Slaybeh, Mashrou’ Al-Slaybeh, Al-Raml,
Skantoori, and Al-Hirsh road anticipating protests and clearing the way for pro
regime marches as well.
Sidawi area was
surrounded, and security members spent their morning clearing streets of Slaybeh
and Mashrou’ Al-Slaybeh from freedom fliers thrown in by activists.
25 year-olds Bashar
Janzarli and Ahamd Hajour were arrested today in Sidawi, as well as 30 year-old
Muhammad Battikha 15 days back. Also arrested was college student Muhammad
Walid Saidi at the university; he’s 23 from Jableh.
Mazen Dergham Haj
Suleiman disappeared since yesterday while getting heading to Bdama village;
Mazen is 32, married, and has 4 daughters. Also disappearing is similar fashion
was Ibrahim Siyo as he left his village Dourine heading to Salma village.
According to our
sources, detainee Ahmad Haj Ibrahim was subjected to the worst kinds of torture
while being in the National Hospital before being transferred yesterday to an
unknown place. He’s hit with a gunshot. We call upon all humanitarian organizations
to interfere and reveal his whereabouts.
