Daily report from
Latakia on Friday [Protocol of Death] 23/12/2011
Another Friday… Heavy
security… protests! As usual Security and thugs surrounded many of the city
mosques like Al-Muhajireen, Al-Ajjan, Zuzu, Al-Bazaar, and BeirQdar, as well as
totally surrounding the Oweineh and Qalaa areas to prevent any protests, and
completely blocking Tabiyat area by security cars where Al-Rahman mosque was
sounded with security and few top ranked army officers. On the other hand it
was fairly quit in Al-Ajjan mosque due to Shaikh Zakariya Salwayeh who’s seen
as a regime figure here in Latakia.
Security was also
present as heavily near Nidal School in Ashrafiyeh, Abi-Tammam Park, Shukri
Hakim School, Antakia street, and MarTaqla.
All that could not
stop people going on protests, as a big one took place in Al-Rawda mosque in
Mashrou’ Yaseen, and ended up with security surrounding those in the mosque,
beating and swearing at them, as well as arresting two; one was Imad Al-Sari
fro Jebel Al-Zawieh who’s a fifth year Power Engineering college student.
In Husien mosque, and
as a demo was taking shape, fully armed security attacked people inside the
mosque, the situation escalated to security arresting some and people getting
angrier as some of them started attacked some of the unarmed members, which in
the end led to security releasing those captured.
A similar thing took
place in Al-Fattahi mosque as security and thugs attacked protesters inside.
While Yaseen mosque saw a protest attempt halted immediately by security.
Protesting also took
place in the Babanna abd Jengheel villages after the noon prayers, while
security sounded Al-Gharbi mosque in Haffeh town to prevent any protests. And
at night people of Zenqouqa village gathered chanting for freedom, whereas in
Salma village they praised the Lord aloud.
Later on many swift
protests took place in Antakia and in Qnainas, as well as in Oweineh where
security raided the neighborhood breaking into buildings and searching them.
Another night protest took place in Slaybeh near Hamad mosque.
Tension is high is the
University’s dorm these days as it is filled with security and Baath Party
members led by Ghaled Shehade; these were armed with knives and other objects
to deal with any possible protest after few students witnessed the incidents in
Rawda and Yaseen mosques mentioned earlier.
Security also raided
Mashrou’ Al-Slaybeh, and Al-Raml where many were arrested on Al-Bahr Street
near Freedom Square. Three others were arrested in Skantoori near Ashur mosque,
one was Muhammad Jaleq and one is called Naser. Qnainas was also raided by
Assad thugs while an explosion was heard.
Some of the people
still detained is 31 years old Muhammad Noor Darweesh from Bustan Al-Sidawi who
was arrested on 1/5/2011, and 37 years old Ahmad Ghazzuleen from Al-Raml who
got arrested on 1/12/2011, and 26 year old Mutaaz Haj Bakri from MarTaqla who
was arrested on 5/11/2011.
Power cuts continue in
the city, while security uses this fact to hide in building halls or dark
corner. In Graf in Al-Raml they chanted revolutionary slogans attempting to
ambush activists and protesters.
For the first time
power was off in the Port at the same time of three warships passing through
its waters.
Most of today's events are documented in videos below.
