Latakia on Tuesday 27/12/2011
Nearly total strike
paralyzed many schools in the city like; Shukri Hakim, Moujamma Al-Banat,
Al-Karama, Suleiman Hambo, and Suleiman Hambo 2. The strike was estimated as
97% in these schools.
A protest took place
in Suleiman Hambo School in Mashrou’ Al-Slaybeh, similar to the one held by
Shukri Hakim School in Bor Saed street, which was joined by many before
security surrounded and dispersed it arresting few young men. Another protest
was held in Bustan Al-Sidawi. In addition to a night demo in Qnainas.
Many security cars
were seen arriving at Yusef Naddaf School in Al-Raml, as a Shabiba [a Baath
party based organization for youth] representative in the school searched
students confiscating their mobiles and giving them to the security patrol
outside the school. Security forces were also positioned near Adnan Al-Maliki
School anticipating student demos.
In Haffeh, students
failed to form a demo going out of schools due to heavy security, and gathered
instead near Al-Gharbi mosque protesting there, while a demo took place in
Salma village.
A huge explosion hit
Qnainas today and resulted in one of a building’s wall to fall down. And at
night an explosion was heard in Maisaloon Street, and another one in Ashrafiah.
Security presence is visibly
increasing; raids and arrests are also on the rise. Security forces and thugs surrounded
Slaybeh area near Houriah mosque, while gunfire was heard in Ashrafiyeh and
Al-Hirsh road. Six silver pick-ups as well as two white police cars fully armed
roamed around in Al-Kornish Al-Janoobi. People as cars we searched on barriers
in Ain Tamra and Skantoori.
Three white Station
cars that belonged to army intelligence were seen confiscating all tires from
streets and from few car shops.
Heavy security
presence was seen in the Tishreen Unversity round-about, and inside the Literature
Faculty while fully armed, and they confiscated all student cards returning
some and keeping others, as well as searching all bags.
Security raided Qnainas
area very early in the morning arresting many, one of those detained was 35
year-old Yahya Skaif, as well as Saeed Abu-Zaid. The house of an activist was
raided today in Owieneh; everything was smashed while his family was verbally
abused.
As for arrests, 28
years old Muhrez Muhammad Swadi , who works in a marble factory and on a car
after hours, got arrested on a barrier in Al-Raml, we also mention that he was
arrested and let go last Tuesday. 21 years old Ismail Al-Shuhan, who’s a taxi
driver, was arrested similarly on a barrier in Masbah Al-Shaab, he’s also the
brother of Muhammad; a kid who was killed by the air force intelligence
members.
On the 25th
of this month, Ahmad Muhammad Jouma, who’s a 15 year-old from Mashrou’
Al-Slaybeh, a lone kid for his widowed father, got arrested and is still in a
security branch. And on Friday the 23rd, 20 years old Omar Saloukha
was arrested randomly near Al-Fattahi mosque. Yet to be released is 29 years
old Akram Darweesh who was arrested last May from his workplace in Bustan
Al-Sidawi. While last night, two were arrested in Yafa neighborhood in Al-Raml,
and they are Saeed Abu-Jouma and Saleh Al-Awadi.
Today as well, 28
years old Samer Jamous from Tabiyat was arrested in front of Olabi Café, and at
night in Mashrou’ Al-Slaybeh 23 years old Taha Tizini and 24 years old Muhammad
Ikhtiar got who are from Tabiyat arrested.
In the evening
security raided Al-Qalaa and chased after many locals. Slaybeh was also raided
and a person was randomly arrested near Al-Jamiaa bookstore. Three cars entered
Ain Um-Ibrahim arresting another person randomly with the charge of carrying a
bomb.
Mahmood Jouma Hamo was
killed, Muhammad Sabbagh and Muhammad Al-Shaikh were injured, while four other were arrested
on the Syrian-Turkish borders in Ain Al-Baidha village near Jisr Al-Shughur for
attempting to enter medical supplies into afflicted areas, Mahmood was from
Latakia.
