Daily report from
Latakia on Friday [The March to Freedom Squares] 29/12/2011
Heavy security
presence overshadows each Friday, and today was not different. They were all
over the city like Shaikh Daher, Ugharit square, Skantoori, Slaybeh near
Fattahi and Slaybeh mosques, Husein mosque, and other spots. A new barrier was
added near Shelfatiah village in Al-Haffeh.
Of course all that
wouldn’t stop demos. Two demos took place in Slaybeh, as security blocked roads
near Adidas shop. A demo near BeirQdar mosque was attacked by 4 fully armed
security cars, and many were arrested, like 17 year-old Abdul-Salam Androon
from Mashrou’ Al-Slaybeh, the mosque was then surrounded by 7 cars and about
250 members to prevents protesters from gathering again, while an explosion and
gunfire were heard in the area.
A big demo was
inspired in Fattahi mosque by the shouts of a young kid, but soon the mosque
was surrounded shutting one entrance and arresting four on the other entrance.
A protest started shaping up in Bazaar mosque; army then surrounded the mosque
similarly and arrested three. A swift demo took place in Al-Sidawi.
People demonstrated
coming out of Husien mosque, and were met by thugs not security with electric
sticks. They beat protesters and dragged a fainted man into a car, only for
other protestors to attack the car until the man was released. Thugs were then
reinforced with 5 more cars, and they fired in the air to disperse the crowds.
In town of Al-Haffeh
big demos took place in Babanna and Jengheel villages, as well as in Shirqaq
and Msherfeh villages with a noticeable participation of women, which was
followed by power cuts in those villages. Another big demo was organized in
Salma village.
All protest were
accompanied by security movements, as 8 thugs’ cars were seen leaving Al-Batta
building towards Mashrou’ Al-Slaybeh. 10 cars headed to Oweineh, and three
trucks and two officers’ cars arrived at Joul Jammal School, As well as a heavy
presence in Freedom Square in Al-Raml.
Security also spread
near Rawdha mosque to Yaseen mosque all the way to the Roman Church, with
heavier presence near Mughrabi mosque with many arrests taking place. We also
learned that security members dressed as civilians went inside the mosque to
start a protest and therefore ambush other protesters and activists.
Heavy presence was
also noticed near Al-Rahman mosque in Tabiyat, where an 18 year-old was
arrested randomly. Houriah mosque was surrounded to prevent any protests. Nine
thugs’ cars with around 70 armed members were seen going through 8th
of March St. probably heading to Antakia and Qnainas.
Al-Dounia TV filmed
near Abi-Darda’ mosque while surrounded with security, and they also filmed in
Shaikh Daher knowing the most of those inside Ajjan mosque were actually
security members.
Two days back Ahmad
Hasno of Al-Raml was arrested, he’s 30 and a father of two. Today, 17 years old
Ali Mkaiyes was arrested near Husien mosque by security, while Mustafa Ahmad
Ameen and his two brothers Abdul-Majeed and Abdul-Azeez are still arrested
since two months. Yesterday, 16 were arrested in Oweineh after an informant
gave their names to security.
Yesterday, also, few
activists wrote freedom and anti regime notes on walls and streets in American
Street, and distributed freedom fliers, while security painted over all
writings later on.
In other news, regime
thugs were spotted placed an unknown object in Iskan Street.
A car with a foreign
plate number was seen roaming streets of Mashrou’ Al-Slaybeh, maybe to trick
people into believing it belonged to the Arab League observers.
School principals
called upon teacher and staff late at midnight of yesterday to meet with the
general principal in the morning, this however turned out to be a trick to
organize them to demonstrate for the regime!
Two days ago we learned
of a sniper who’s existing permanently inside Karama bakery near Al-Karama
School and Al-Hamad mosque.
Below are many videos documenting most of what came in our report.
