Daily report from Latakia on Tuesday 25/10/2011:
The day was marked by many explosions which could be heard in many
parts of the city at night. A big explosion shook the neighborhood of
Oweineh as well as two others in Qnainas, while many more disturbed the
relative peace in Slaybeh and Mashrou' Al-Slaybeh.
Today was also marked by shootings in various parts where people have
been known to protest. And one person was shot and injured in Mashrou'
Al-Slaybeh and was then put in a pick-up car after being beaten up.
In another stream, a quick protest took place in Tabiyat refusing
dialogue with the regime and praying for Homs, which another protest
broke out of Hambo school and was met by security who arrested many
students and surrounded the area with 12 cars. Students of the Nursing
school have also went on a demonstration inside their school with
similar demands.
Fine Arts school was surrounded today with three security cars with
heavy guns fixed on them to prevent any protests while students were
forced to sign papers promising not to demonstrate.
People were shot at today while distributing paper clippings promoting for the general strike and opposing the regime.
All that was amid a very heavy security presence, with new barriers
fixed in few neighborhoods. Mobile barriers roamed around in Shaikh
Daher, while seven security cars roamed around Iskan street in slaybeh.
Two other cars blocked all entries to Slaybeh, while security members
raided the area looking for activists around 1:30. Security also raided
Tabiyat and Bustan Al-Sidawi arresting few pedestrians after the protest
that took place there.
We mention that security have placed cameras inside Omar bin
Al-Khattab mosque in Antakia street to monitor people and arrest those
who call for protests, and they're also cooperating with a bakery shop
owner in the area who turned in many activists.
In Al-Raml Al-Janoobi:
Heavy security presence was a feature in the area as security members
were dressed in military outfits in Al-Graf neighborhood searching
houses. They've also increased barriers beside Masbah Al-Shaab.
The following were arrested there:
- Ahmad Khaled Ibo, 27 years old, arrested in his house.
- Wafeeq Shaikh Hasan, 33 years old, arrested in his computer shop.
- Four others arrested in Al-Graf.
And as for the pre-planned pro-regime demonstration for Thursday; an
official letter was sent out to schools and government departments
calling principals and managers of such organizations to get their
students and employees to go out on the protest as a national duty and
under threats of severe penalties should they fail the mission.
